FAQs about pet insurance
What is covered under a pet insurance policy?
There is a variety of different insurances and elements of cover. You can insure your pet for just veterinary fees, or fully cover your pet for loss/theft and also death.
How much will pet insurance cost me?
Policies start from as little as £2.99 a month/£36 annually for general accident cover. Paying around £10 per month would cover you for everything, including loss/theft and death of your pet. Take your time choosing the best policy to suit you.
Will I have to pay an excess?
Most policies will come with a small excess if a claim was made, although some insurers will instead charge a slightly higher premium. You can pay your premium on a small monthly payment plan or, alternatively, pay a one-off annual fee.
Is my pet not covered under my home insurance?
No, you will need to take out two separate policies. You could not make a claim on your home insurance for any pet-related injuries, theft, loss or veterinary bills.
Is there a limit on how many times I can claim on my pet insurance policy?
Most insurers will put a limit per qualifying accident and then an annual limit, rather than a set amount of times you can claim. If you take out ‘Lifetime cover’ you will generally have a higher amount per claim and no limit annually.
Does my pet insurance cover me abroad?
Many pet insurance policies will cover you while you are abroad. However, those who do provide cover may only pay out for vet fees and not cover for loss, theft or death. There may also be restrictions on destinations, so before you travel with your pet you should contact your insurer or check your policy documents.
Does pet insurance only cover dogs and cats?
Most insurers will only cover dogs and cats, however, there are some who cover a whole variety of pets.
