Why do I need to work through an Umbrella Company?
An umbrella company is a balance between being an independent contractor and having an employer to handle your financial affairs. It is the main alternative to setting up as a limited company. Umbrella Companies are best thought of as an intermediary between the contractor and the end client, and they are responsible for organising payment for your work.
You will become an employee of the Umbrella Company under an overarching contract of employment, with a view to carrying out a number of assignments during the course of your employment.
To enable you to work for an end client, your Umbrella Company will enter into a contract with your recruitment agency. You will carry out your contracted duties at your temporary workplace. You simply submit your timesheets to your Umbrella Company, mostly through their portals, and they will raise an invoice to your agency.
The recruitment agency or end client will pay your Umbrella Company the full contract rate to cover payments for the work you have completed. They will also include all the costs related to your employment, such as employers NICs and holiday pay. This rate should be considerably higher than if you were paid PAYE directly by the agency / end client.
